How are the logs peeled?

All of our Northern White Cedar logs are cut in the winter time in extreme Northern Minnesota. After they have been cut, they are air dried for at least two summers. This process allows the bark to naturally release from the log, so we are able to “hand-peel” each log individually. This drying and peeling process helps to preserve the logs natural character like rustic knots, worm tracking, beetle holes. Many log furniture manufacturers “machine peel” their logs and make them perfectly round removing all of the natural character of the log that we try so hard to maintain.

Why do they use Northern White Cedar?

Aside from its abundance in Northern Minnesota, Northern White Cedar has more character than pine. Cedar’s color will vary from light to dark on each log depending on how much innercambium is left on the log. There are also more knots in cedar because the branches are closer together on a cedar tree. Additionally, the moisture content is 40% less than pine, so it is much lighter to work with and is a more stable product.

What are the cracks in my logs from?

Even though our hickory logs are kiln dried and our cedar logs are air dried, every log will “check”. “Checking” is the natural drying process that every log goes through to release its moisture. It is quite common for each log to get one primary “check” that goes to the center of the log and occasionally there will be a secondary “check”. The “check” will only go to the core/center of the log and does not go past the core/center. It will not affect the structural integrity of our furniture. It is quite common to have this happen in Fall when homes furnaces start to kick in for the first time.
